"The Paint Can" Mosquito Mustangs dominate in Brantford

"The Paint Can" Mosquito Mustangs came ready to play in their first tournament of the season in Brantford. Welland crushed the ball all over the ballpark, played great defence and pounded the strike zone for 5 consecutive games. The team outscored opponents on the weekend 76 - 5, receiving strong contributions by all members of the team.
In their opener Friday night, Welland scored early and often, beating Kitchener 27 -1 in 3 innings. Jaxon Vanderlip went the distance on the mound for the victory and was aided by 3 double plays turned behind. Game MVP went to Zoe Falardeau for her performance at the plate.
On Saturday, the boys opened up versus a strong pitcher from Blenheim, eventually pulling away in the late innings for a 14 - 0 victory. Mason VanDyke started on the mound and was his dominant self. He was followed up by Zoe Falardeau, who once again earned MVP honours. Their final game of the round robin saw "The Paint Can" bats come to life, lead by Jaxon Vanderlip's grand slam, Tyler Ray's homerun and multiple hits by Jack Ilskens, Trent Groulx & Jacob Doucette. On the pitching side, Doucette combined with Spencer Burke to control the Port Dover offence in a 22 - 1 victory. MVP honours went to Travis Guttin for his strong defensive play.
Sunday's semi-final game versus Beamsville saw starting pitcher & MVP Mason VanDyke go toe to toe with his Beamsville counterpart through 5 innings. Welland carried a 3 - 2 lead into the 7th before allowing Beamsville to pull even in the top of the inning. In the bottom half, Falardeau lead off with a double and later scored on a 1 out single by Doucette. Tyler Ray, in relief, picked up the win.
The final saw the Mustangs face Halton Hills. Strong pitching by Ray & Doucette stymied the Eagles offence, along with great defence in the outfield by Vanderlip & Alex McQuillan. Hustle by Ozzy Gulla lead to the first run of the game followed by big hits from Spencer Burke & Josh Lamb. The 'Stangs erupted for 6 runs in the 4th and closed out the game with a 10 - 0 mercy in the 5th.
Tournament MVP honours went to Doucette for his great play at the plate and on the mound.
